Julie Greer a long time resident of Strawberry Flat, decided in 1999 to brighten Twin Peaks up with one of her favorite flowers daffodils. With the help of a neighbor she planted several hundred bulbs.
One Julie's dreams was to see all of Twin Peaks filled with daffodils. So the next year she purchased 1,000 daffodils bulbs and with the help of her husband Tom they planted them. The projects continued to grow with 10,000 bulbs planted the next year.
Sadly, in July 2001, we lost our beloved neighbor Julie to breast cancer.
While Tom Greer and his wife are no longer able to continue the plantings. Homeowners still continue to plant their own and our roads still are enjoying the fruits of their previous labors. The Association hopes to organize future plantings as able.
If you would like to order daffodils Tom recommends you order in May at Dutchgrown.com or Dutchbulbs.com . There are 3 varieties that last the longest in our area, they are Fortissimo, Carlton, Ice Follies. Make sure you buy the large bulbs the small ones don’t bloom. Plant in October or November. Dig down a foot turn up the dirt and plant about 8 inches down. The bulbs need drainage so they do better in loose soil verses hard soil. They are sun lovers and don’t do well next to trees.
Strawberry Flats was one of the first places in the San Bernardino Mountain to be settled year around. It was first used as a camp site for loggers. There are remnants of the old saw mill down Grandview in back of Calvary Chapel. We got our name because of all the wonderful wild strawberries that filled this valley and, because it is one of the few places in the hilly Lake Arrowhead area that had level ground, so the name Strawberry Flat. All this land was part of the US Forest Service.
Ranger Switzer became the first full time forest ranger on the mountain around 1912. Swizter ran the first year around store and post office on the mountain here in Strawberry Flat. The original site is where the Pine Rose pool is located now.
Until 1969 all the Strawberry Flat cabins were located on land leased by the US Forest Service. A group of owners worked diligently to do a land exchange with the forest service so they could own the land. The US Forest Service accepted 160 acres of virgin land for the 130 acres of National Forest which is now Strawberry Flat Property Owners' Association. This exchange not only allowed homeowners to own their land it also incorporated green belts through out the tract called "common land". Currently, the Association has a total 200 lots and 172 separate property owners. We are one of the oldest property owners associations in the state.
Our Bylaws reflect the conditions set by the US Forest Service. The three main ones those being, to maintain the green belts, stay with forest colors reds, greens, and browns, lastly to have trash service for the property owners.
Strawberry Flat Property Owners' Association or SFPOA is an association of private property owners that reside in Twin Peaks CA in the San Bernardino Mountains.
